The Onion: Last Remaining Politician Must Rebuild Entire
Government Following Bloodiest Midterm Election In American
History
The
lead story today in the
Onion,
America's finest news source:
WASHINGTON—In the wake of what is being called the deadliest
midterm election in the nation's history, Washington's sole
surviving politician, Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon's 4th
Congressional District, emerged from the rubble of the Capitol
building Wednesday to announce his intention to rebuild the
fallen U.S. government.

What Might Be the Best Political Campaign Ads Ever ... An Object
Lesson for the Oregon Gubernatorial Race
This from our neighboring
state of California is as an object lesson for Oregon voters.
Democrat Jerry Brown, who was the
California governor 30 years ago, and Republican Meg Whitman, billionaire
former eBay CEO, are battling for the governorship of
California. Whitman presents herself as the candidate for change
and characterized Brown as a retread political hack from the
past.
Two of Brown's TV ads turn Whitman's words
against her and transform Brown's alleged weakness into strength.
First, watch as Whitman "new ideas" are (correctly) shown to be
nothing but the same recycled political platitudes used by the
spectacularly
unpopular current Republican Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger.
Next, see Jerry Brown's
weakness become his strength when
Whitman's words are turned into praise for Jerry Brown's term as
governor 30 years ago.
Notice how
Whitman's empty rhetoric about cutting spending and running the
state like a business mirrors that of Chris Dudley, another
wealthy Republican gubernatorial candidate running against a
former governor. Dudley characterizes John Kitzhaber as a
political retread and tries to re-write history by
calling Kitzhaber's very successful and productive eight
years as governor a failure. Like Whitman, Dudley wants
to buy his way into office so that he can make his state even
more comfortable for the wealthy by
cutting taxes for people like himself while
making life harder the middle class and poor.
